what kind of problems have you seen with lithium batteries for RVs?
Now that lithium batteries are main stream in RVs, what kind of problems have you heard of?
The first problem is I have heard that the purchase price was the biggest problem :)! Just kidding, they really have come down in price. See Are Rv lithium batteries worth it for a more serious answer.
Lifespan is not really a problem for lithium RV batteries
Lithium batteries typically have a lifespan of 5-10 years, depending on usage and conditions. Over time, capacity diminishes due to charge-discharge cycles. Factors like high temperatures, overcharging, and deep discharging can reduce their longevity. Regular moderate use and proper storage conditions can optimize a lithium battery’s lifespan.
Over draining Lithium Batteries with internal BMS
We have seen situations where lithium batteries were drained so far that the battery could not continue to power up the BMS. The only way we were able to get the battery running again was to apply (12 volts to this specific battery) to get the BMS booted up and allowing the battery to be charged and discharged. This can be really inconvient when all your power is stored in the batteries.
Having a portable 12 volt jump charger was a huge help in this situation.
Theft of lithium batteries from travel trailer tounges
Having a lithium battery or batteries on the tounge of your trailer can be pretty tempting for theives. Lighter weight and much more valuable, theft can be a real problem. Securing and lock your battery box can a real detterent to theft.
